Save to PinterestA busy book is a binder of laminated pages with pieces that stick on with Velcro. Toddlers match, sort and count by moving the pieces around, and because nothing gets written on, the same book lasts for months.
This one has 12 activities. Color, shape and shadow matching come first, then feelings, counting to 10, patterns and sorting pictures into color boxes. The circle time page asks what day it is, what the weather is like and how they feel. ABC Match pairs capital and lowercase letters across two pages, and two four-piece picture puzzles go together on their own page. Tracing lines and shapes with a dry-erase marker adds some pencil practice.
Making it takes an evening: print, laminate, cut the 111 pieces and add Velcro dots. The guide for grown-ups goes through it step by step. After that it goes in the bag for car trips, restaurants and waiting rooms.
Print at Actual size (100%) on card stock of 65 to 80 lb (200 to 250 gsm); plain paper works if you laminate it. Laminate the pages before cutting out the pieces, then add a Velcro dot to each piece and its matching spot. Book rings make it easier for small hands to turn the pages than a thick binder.
A laminator or clear sheet protectors, scissors, about 120 pairs of Velcro dots and a binder or book rings. For the tracing pages you'll need a dry-erase marker.
About an evening. Cutting out the 111 pieces takes the longest.
The pieces are small, so stay close while younger toddlers play, and keep them away from children who still put things in their mouths.
